How to Care for a Handcrafted Wooden Jagannath Idol
A handcrafted wooden Lord Jagannath idol deserves gentle care. Wood responds naturally to moisture, heat and sunlight, while painted details can be affected by rough cleaning or chemicals. A simple routine can preserve the idol’s colours and finish for years.
Keep the idol dry
Place the idol in a clean, dry location away from leaking walls, damp shelves and direct water exposure. Avoid washing or soaking a painted wooden idol. Excessive humidity can affect wood and decorative materials over time.
Clean with a soft dry cloth or brush
For regular cleaning, use a soft, clean and completely dry cloth. A soft artist’s brush can remove dust from eyes, crowns and narrow spaces. Support the idol or its base while cleaning and avoid pulling hands, ornaments or attached decorations.
Avoid chemicals and perfume
Do not apply household cleaner, sanitiser, furniture polish, perfume or oil unless the artisan has specifically recommended it for that finish. Chemicals may dull the colours, soften decorative glue or leave stains.
Protect from direct sunlight and heat
Strong sunlight may fade painted colours, while heat can affect wood and adhesives. Keep the idol away from hot lamps, heaters and prolonged afternoon sunlight. If using a diya nearby, maintain a safe distance and never leave it unattended.
Handle the idol correctly
Lift the idol from its body or stable base using both hands. Do not lift it by a crown, hand, Sudarshan or decorative attachment. When moving a complete set, transfer one piece at a time unless everything is securely fixed to a stand.
Using dresses and ornaments
Dress the deities gently. Avoid tight threads, pins or wire that can scratch paint. Do not force a dress made for a smaller size. Store unused Jagannath dress sets in a dry box and keep embroidery away from moisture.
What to do if you notice a crack
Wood can develop natural movement when humidity changes. Do not immediately fill or repaint a crack with household materials. Photograph the area clearly and ask the maker or a skilled wooden-idol artisan for advice. An unsuitable adhesive or paint may make restoration more difficult.
Safe storage and transport
If the idol must be stored, wrap it first in soft clean material, protect delicate parts separately and place it in a strong box. Do not allow heavy objects to press against the face, hands or crown. Keep the box dry and clearly marked as fragile.
Monthly care checklist

With respectful handling and a dry environment, a handcrafted wooden Jagannath idol from Puri can remain a beautiful centre of devotion for a long time.
